Utilization management is the set of clinical and administrative processes used to ensure services are medically necessary, appropriately timed, and delivered in the right setting. It includes prior authorization, concurrent review, discharge planning, level-of-care review, and retrospective review. In strong organizations, utilization management is integrated with care management and physician leadership rather than treated only as a denial-prevention function.
